What’s changing?

The United States has ended the long-standing “de minimis” rule for low-value imports. From August 29, 2025, all commercial shipments entering the US—no matter the value—are subject to import duties and standard customs processing.

What this means for Smith & The Magpie orders

  • Tariff rate on Smith & The Magpie goods: Our products are made in the United Kingdom. Under the current US “reciprocal tariff” framework, imports from the UK are subject to the baseline 10% tariff.
  • Who collects the tariff: Smith & the Magpie ships to the US with various couriers. These couriers such as UPS, DHL etc act as our customs broker and will contact you directly to collect any duties after we dispatch and before delivery.
  • Applies to all orders to the US: The removal of de minimis means even small orders that were previously duty-free may now incur duties.

When does this start?

  • Orders dispatched on or after August 29, 2025 (US time) will be processed under the new rules.

How much will I pay? (simple example)

  • If your Smith & The Magpie order value is US$300, the indicative tariff is 10% = US$30 (final amounts are confirmed by US Customs/Couriers at clearance as this is still fairly unclear).
  • Depending on the shipment and customs processing, additional government fees may apply. The courier will advise the total amount due during clearance.

How you’ll pay

  1. We dispatch your order.
  2. Courier emails/texts you a secure link or invoice for the tariff due.
  3. You pay courier online.
  4. Courier completes customs clearance and delivers your package.

FAQs

Will this affect my delivery timeline?

Based on our experiences in other jurisdictions, it is unlikely to add any delays to delivery if the invoice is paid during the transit and clearance period moving forward, however it is to be expected that the first few weeks of implementing the new tariffs, parcels may take longer to clear than usual. If you have any concerns about delivery timelines contact our team at hello@smithandthemagpie.com

Does this affect customers outside the US?

No—this update is only for deliveries to the United States.

Why is this happening now?

The US issued new measures in 2025 that (i) impose “reciprocal” tariffs and (ii) suspend de minimis globally from Aug 29, 2025.

Are UK goods facing higher-than-10% tariffs?

Current guidance indicates UK remains at the 10% baseline (no extra increases announced for the UK at this time).
